Fillings, Dental Veneers and Sealants…Oh My!

Now is the time that you learned more about these dental treatments that could one day be necessary to improve the health of your smile.

There are so many different cosmetic and restorative dental options that it’s easy to confuse them or mix them up. Our Baltimore family cosmetic dentistrydentists Dr. James Delaney Jr. and Dr. Melanie Burke offer patients an incredible variety of treatments and restorations to help boost their smile’s appearance and protect their teeth for the long run. Find out more about these three popular dental procedures that they offer:

Dental Fillings

A dental filling is the restorative material that is used to fill a cavity. A special material is applied over certain areas of the tooth after our Baltimore, MD general dentist has removed decay to restore the tooth and its appearance.

Fillings can be made from a variety of materials from metal amalgam to ceramic, porcelain and composite resin. The type of filling you get will depend on the severity and location of the decay, your dental insurance coverage and the cost of the filling. We would be happy to sit down with you and discuss which option is best for treating a cavity.

Dental Veneers

If you are dealing with minor to moderate imperfections that you wish you could hide, then say hello to dental veneers. These thin tooth-colored shells are bonded to the front of your teeth to give you a brand new smile that is straighter, whiter and more even. Veneers are a great option if you want to brighten your smile but teeth whitening isn’t appropriate for you. It can also help improve certain minor alignment issues so that you don’t even need to get braces. Of course, some tooth enamel will need to be removed prior to placing the veneers. While this is painless the process is not reversible, unless you choose Lumineers.

Lumineers are veneers that are so thin that they can be applied to your teeth without any enamel removal. So if you want to get veneers but aren’t satisfied with them for any reason they can easily be removed without it affecting the original shape of your smile.

Dental Sealants

This is a great preventive option for child, teens and even adults who are prone to cavities, particularly on molars and premolars. It can be more challenging to brush all these nooks and crannies on the chewing surfaces of your back teeth. As a result, it’s more likely that a cavity will develop in the back of your smile.

To combat this issue, our Baltimore general dentist will paint a tooth-colored plastic seal over the chewing surfaces of these teeth to prevent food and bacteria from being trapped in the fissures and cracks. It’s completely painless and can even be placed at your next six-month cleaning.
